THE HERO
Janet Van Dyne is the daughter of renowned scientist Vernon Van Dyne. Her father was killed when an alien was brought to earth by one of his experiments. Out for revenge, she contacted her father's colleague Hank Pym. Pym revealed to Janet that he was Ant-Man*, the Avenger. Ant-Man is a biochemist who had discovered Pym Particles, which allowed him to shrink to the size of an ant. After undergoing a biochemical enhancement at the hands of Dr. Pym and his gifted inventions, Janet gained her powers. She is able to reduce her stature to that of a wasp (about 0.5 inches tall.) When at this reduced size, her strength is amplified and she grows wings giving her the ability to fly. Gifted from the laboratories of Dr. Pym, Janet also has the "wasps sting" and implanted retractable antennae that allow her to call on and control other insects. The Wasp's sting gives her the ability to generate powerful bioelectric blasts from her fingertips.
*Despite his name, Ant-Man shares few attributes common with the ant besides his ability to shrink to that relative size. The Wasp shares more insectoid attributes and therefore discussed in depth. There is simply not enough power or fear associated with the brainless, follow-the-leader insect that Ant-Man is named after to justify further association.

THE (FEARED) BUG
A wasp is roughly the size of a paperclip and a very feared insect. The wasps category is made up of over 30,000 species of floating stingers. Wasps are separated from the bees in that the space between their abdomen and thorax, called the petiole, is pinched. Wasps create nests from wood fibers that they scrape and collect using their hardened mandibles. Humans and animals have come to recognize and fear the sting of the wasp, giving them a wide berth. Wasps have a large exoskeleton that covers each portion of their body. Each has a stinger, two antennae, six jointed legs and two sets of transparent wings.

DESIGNER
The Wasp is a collaboration between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Kirby was born on August 28th, 1917 and passed on February 6th, 1994. Growing up a typical New York street kid, Kirby could not be found with a piece of paper void of doodles. Not having any formal education, he learned to illustrate from anything he could get his hands on. By 1959, Kirby secured a job at Timely Comic Company, precursor to Atlas Comics, precursor to Marvel. Kirby was on board with the X-men and Avengers at first release, designing many of the characters for the masses. Wasp made her first appearance in 1963 in Tales to Astonish #44. She has yet to make an appearance on the big screen, but has been prominently featured in the cartoon The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
